I’ve always loved a good road trip around Ohio. And it can be especially magical during the holiday season. Northeast Ohio has some truly standout ways to soak up the Christmas spirit! Over the years, I’ve visited a few unforgettable holiday stops on road trips with friends, including Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, A Christmas Story House, and, most recently, Castle Noël. Each one instantly reminded me why I love Christmas so much. Stan Hywet’s glowing lights and elegant historic rooms made me feel like I’d stepped into a winter fairy tale, while the Christmas Story House tapped straight into classic holiday movie nostalgia. Castle Noël, with its over-the-top decorations and interactive movie magic, brought out my inner kid in the best way. Though each experience is different, they all left a lasting impression. And they’re the kind of places I can’t wait to share with anyone looking for a magical holiday outing. Here are the best Christmas spots in Northeast Ohio.
Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens
If you’re looking for a holiday outing that feels warm, nostalgic, and truly magical, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens in Akron, Ohio is one of the best Christmas spots in Northeast Ohio. The historic estate was once home to the Seiberling family, founders of Goodyear. It is open throughout the year for visitors and is definitely worth a visit. However, every winter it transforms into Deck the Hall- an event filled with twinkling lights, festive decorations, and charming holiday displays.

About Stan Hywet
Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is one of the largest historic homes open to the public in the United States. Built between 1912 and 1915 by F.A. Seiberling, the mansion features 65 rooms and sits on 70 acres of meticulously designed gardens and grounds. While it’s open most of the year, the Christmas season is one of its most beloved traditions and I was so excited to see it!
My Experience at Deck the Hall
I visited during the 2024 Christmas season with my friend Sheri. We arrived at our scheduled time, and because it was early in the day we were able to park in the main parking lot. There is an overflow parking lot further down the street for when it gets very busy, and they will shuttle people over to the lot. After we checked in we grabbed a hot chocolate and hot chocolate from the stand that is set up. Of course, no holiday exploration is complete without treats. Stan Hywet’s Gingerbread Hut offers hot cocoa (adults can even get it spiked), cookies, and warm holiday snacks. It’s the perfect way to take a break and enjoy the festive atmosphere. Then, we wandered around the outside, because there are no food or drinks allowed inside the house. But wow, what a beautiful property!

Outside, the gardens were breathtaking. The Birch Tree Allée must be particularly magical at night, lined with lights that guide you through. Colorful light tunnels, sparkling trees, and reflections on the Lagoon all make for stunning photos.

Exploring inside the Stan Hywet house
Inside the Manor House, each room is uniquely decorated with themed Christmas trees. There were vintage ornaments, garlands, and displays that were both elegant and full of personality. The rooms are created and designed by greater Akron florists and professional decorators. Them, along with numerous volunteers, work for weeks to deck out the estate for the annual Deck the Hall event. The attention to detail is incredible, you can tell the decorators put heart into every room. Check out The Great Hall, which really stood out, the large grand room with towering trees and golden lights.

I also loved the Library and Drawing Room. There, cozy seating areas were accented with the stunning Christmas trees, polished wood surfaces, and antique decorations. The Library’s shelves were dotted with leather-bound books making me just want to cozy up and read, while the Drawing Room’s garlands and vintage toys gave it a warm, playful energy.

The Sunroom, with its large windows looking out over the gardens, was transformed into a glittering winter wonderland of silver and blue. Moving from room to room in the house, it’s impossible not to feel enchanted- every space feels like a new scene in a holiday story.

Upstairs in the Stan Hywet House
Upstairs, the holiday magic continues in the bedrooms and private sitting areas, each with its own theme and personality. One room immediately caught my attention with a Barbie-themed display. It felt playful and nostalgic, bringing back memories of my childhood while still fitting seamlessly into the elegant holiday décor of the house. Though less my style, the was another room with a Star Wars-themed tree, filled with festive figurines and tiny spacecraft decked out with lights and ornaments. I loved seeing the whimsical side of Christmas reflected in these rooms.

The master bedroom features a grand, elegantly adorned tree that complements the room’s rich woodwork and antique furnishings.I loved seeing the little details like the Santa Clause outfits and boots in the closets.

As you can imagine, every room in this house was beautifully decorated for Christmas. The informal dining room and butler’s pantry are decorated with festive garlands, vintage holiday linens, and Muppets characters! What a fun twist that I loved!

Stan Hywet greenhouse & gardens
During Deck the Hall, the greenhouse and gardens at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens are just as magical as the Manor House. The historic greenhouse glows with soft holiday lighting woven through lush greenery. Stepping inside feels cozy and peaceful, with twinkling lights reflecting off glass panes and plants. It was a perfect spot to pause and take photos.

Here are some helpful suggestions based on my experience:
- Arrive early to enjoy both the indoor mansion and outdoor light displays without rushing.

Castle Noël
In the hunt for another one of the best Christmas spots in Northeast Ohio, in December of 2025 a couple of friends and I headed to Medina to visit Castle Noël. Known as America’s largest year-round indoor Christmas entertainment attraction, Castle Noël is a whimsical, immersive experience created by artist Mark Klaus and his wife Dana. Housed in a massive building just steps from Medina’s charming historic square, the attraction spans more than 40,000 square feet. And it is packed with nostalgia, movie magic, and over-the-top holiday cheer.

What to see at Castle Noël
Visits to Castle Noël are guided, with different sections of the museum introduced by knowledgeable staff members who share behind-the-scenes stories along the way. Before the tour there is an introduction video. Then, right when you enter, visitors are welcomed into the mailroom, where children can send letters to Santa. This area also features a beautifully detailed holiday clock, which chimes throughout the tour. I also loved the wall of photos showcasing iconic Christmas movie actors and unforgettable scenes from classic holiday films. It’s a charming introduction that immediately pulls you into the magic of the experience.

Vintage Department Store Christmas Windows at Castle Noël
One of my favorite parts of the tour is walking through the recreated vintage department store Christmas windows brought from NYC. Complete with animated figures, retro signage, and colorful decorations, the displays reminded me the kind of windows I’d press my face up against as a kid. They were completely charming.

Castle Noël is for Kids (and the Kids at Heart)
Visiting Castle Noël is great for bringing out your inner child. One section of the tour features Disney-themed Christmas window displays, which Castle Noel acquired from Main Street Walt Disney World itself. Just beyond the windows, guests enter a gingerbread-themed theater. There a short performance starring animatronic animals brings the room to life with movement and sound. It’s playful, cozy, and very reminiscent of Disney. It was very cheery and sweet, and just one more thing that makes Castle Noel special

From walking through a swirling Blizzard Vortex tunnel to running through something that feels squeezing down Santa’s chimney, it was very theatrical. There’s also a nostalgic toy section that sparks plenty of “I had that!” moments for adults. So many experiences at Castle Noël are hands-on. But one of the best is riding down the indoor slide inspired by A Christmas Story.

Celebrate Christmas movies at Castle Noel
One of the biggest highlights of Castle Noel is its impressive collection of original movie props and costumes from beloved Christmas films. Visitors can see items from classics like Elf, Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Story, A Christmas Carol, Jingle All the Way, and The Santa Clause movies. It makes Castle Noël a must-visit for film fans. Look at the pictures below, can you name all the movies the props came from? Many of the exhibits are animated, interactive, and designed to make you feel like you’re inside a movie scene rather than walking through a museum. Outside the museum in the terrace, the actual family truckster (camper-style station wagon) used in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. It made for an essential photo opportunity!

Visitor Information for Castle Noël
Castle Noël is open year-round, though hours vary by season and day of the week. The attraction typically operates Wednesday through Sunday, with extended hours during peak holiday months like November and December. Ticket prices are $27.95 for Tuesday through Thursday, and $29.95 from Friday-Monday. Kids 12 and under visit for $24.95, and seniors and military can save $1. There is no designated parking lot, but there are many lots around downtown Medina. All visits are guided tours with scheduled start times, so advance reservations are required and highly recommended- especially during the Christmas season, when tickets frequently sell out.
More to explore in Medina
Beyond the tour itself, Castle Noël offers plenty to explore. The attraction features a large gift shop filled with Christmas ornaments, collectibles, décor, and movie-themed souvenirs. There is also an on-site restaurant where guests can enjoy a meal or snack before or after their tour underneath a twinkling ceiling. Visitors can also add some extra fun with indoor Christmas-themed mini golf, making it easy to extend the experience. A visit to Castle Noël also pairs perfectly with a stroll around Medina Square. There were beautifully decorated storefront windows, a festive town square, local shops, cozy coffee spots, brewery and restaurants which complete the holiday atmosphere. Together, a visit to Castle Noël and time spent exploring Medina is truly one of the best Christmas spots in Northeast Ohio.

Visiting a Christmas Story House
If you love holiday movies as much as I do, Castle Noël was a great spot for seeing some nostalgic movie props. But also, just a bit further to northeast in Cleveland, Ohio is one of best, most iconic Christmas movie spots. A few years ago, I visited the A Christmas Story House with my friends Erin and Tricia. From the moment we walked up, it felt like stepping straight onto the set of the movie.

Touring inside the Christmas Story house
Inside, everything was instantly familiar. From the living room Christmas tree with presents underneath, to the telephone where Ralphie’s mom calls to find out how he learned a certain word. I loved seeing Ralphie’s bedroom upstairs, and the bathroom with the bar of soap. We kept pointing things out to each other (“Oh! This is that scene!”), quoting lines, and taking way too many photos, which only made it more fun.

And of the course, the best thing to see was the cozy living room with the glowing leg lamp! What a moment!

Christmas Story House Museum
Across the street, the museum displays original props and costumes that give a peek behind the scenes. Visitors can see Randy’s snowsuit to the pink bunny pajamas. You can also see the firetruck and the Bumpus house next door. And of course- the Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle! Don’t worry, we didn’t shoot our eye out.

Visitor information
The house is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with extended hours during the holiday season. Tickets run $20 for anyone 5 and over. Tickets can be purchased online in advance. The Christmas Story House is a perfect visit for anyone who wants to feel like they have stepped into one of the most classic Christmas movies of all time.
Closing Thoughts
These festive stops truly represent the best Christmas spots in Northeast Ohio, each offering a different way to experience the magic of the season. From the elegant, light-filled rooms of Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens to the nostalgic charm of the A Christmas Story House and the playful, movie-inspired fun of Castle Noël, these destinations prove there’s no single way to celebrate Christmas.
